Temple Beth Israel is situated in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley in Harlingen, Texas, USA. There is only a short 30-mile drive to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and South Padre Island, the chosen paradise for many Winter Texans and spring breakers alike.
With a population of roughly 65,000, Harlingen is fast becoming a popular temporary stop and a permanent home to many, as it has been rated among the 10 least expensive cities to live in the United States by CBS news, Time Magazine, and Kiplinger among others. Life in Harlingen is placid and serene with little traffic, a sizable shopping center, schools, parks, bird-watching, and friendly people.
Cozy Harlingen forms part of a greater metropolis which includes the cities of Brownsville, San Benito, Harlingen, Weslaco, Mercedes, and the McAllen greater area, forming what is known as the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, plus the mega cities of Matamoros and Reynosa on the other side of our border in nearby Mexico. All together, this small city of 65,000 becomes part of an extended cluster of nearly 2,000,000 inhabitants throughout the Valley, which gives you the option to visit nearby cities and enjoy all types of food, entertainment, and night life, all while being able to live in a nice, quiet, tranquil city.
Access to Harlingen is directly on Interstate Highway 69 from the north or US Highway 83 from the west. Aside from its own airport, there are international airports in Brownsville, McAllen, Matamoros and Reynosa, all within an hour’s drive from Harlingen.
San Antonio, Houston, and Austin are all a comfortable 4-hour drive or a short, one-hour-long flight from any of the airports in our neighborhood.
Temple Beth Israel is home to many Jewish families in the Rio Grande Valley and visitors of other faiths who wish to attend our services in a familiar atmosphere where everyone will welcome you regardless of your background.
